A Chinese court sentenced former defense official Zhang Jianhua to ten years imprisonment for bribery charges. The Intermediate People’s Court of Dazhou delivered this verdict Wednesday following a public trial. Zhang previously served as deputy head of China’s national defense science administration.
Specifically, the court imposed separate sentences addressing two distinct bribery charges against the former official. For accepting bribes directly, Zhang received eight years alongside a substantial financial fine. Additionally, prosecutors secured a five-year sentence for leveraging his former influence after retirement.
Combined, these bribery charges resulted in a total ten-year sentence and significant monetary penalties. Furthermore, the court ordered complete confiscation of all illicit gains connected to Zhang’s crimes. These recovered funds will ultimately be transferred directly into China’s state treasury system.
According to court findings, Zhang exploited his official positions between 2008 and 2025 extensively. During this period, he reportedly helped others secure administrative approvals and favorable equity investment opportunities. Consequently, Zhang illegally accepted money and valuables exceeding 43 million yuan total.
Moreover, after retiring, Zhang continued exploiting his previous influence between 2021 and 2025. Through connections with other officials, he secured business and contracting benefits for various parties. This post-retirement scheme yielded additional illegal proceeds worth 11.7 million yuan specifically.
Chinese law classified both offenses as involving especially large amounts of illicit money. Nevertheless, the court granted Zhang a reduced sentence based on several mitigating factors presented. These included voluntary surrender, truthful confession and active cooperation throughout the investigation process.
Additionally, Zhang disclosed previously unknown bribery details and returned all illegally obtained assets voluntarily. During April’s public trial, prosecutors presented evidence while Zhang’s defense team cross-examined witness testimony. Ultimately, Zhang admitted guilt and expressed remorse during his final courtroom statement.
This case reflects China’s continued anti-corruption enforcement efforts targeting officials across various government sectors nationwide. Moving forward, such prosecutions will likely maintain pressure on officials engaging in similar bribery practices.
