LDP Leadership Race: Takaichi, Koizumi Lead Bid

Date:

The LDP leadership race is intensifying as Sanae Takaichi and Shinjiro Koizumi lead public opinion polls ahead of the October 4 party vote. The election follows Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s resignation earlier this month.

Ishiba announced his decision to step down after the ruling coalition lost its parliamentary majority. He cited rising public dissatisfaction over inflation and the cost of living. His resignation triggered the process to elect a new leader of the Liberal Democratic Party.

According to multiple recent surveys, Takaichi currently holds a slight lead over Koizumi. Both candidates have announced their intent to run and plan to file official paperwork in the coming days.

Takaichi, a former internal affairs minister, has strong support from conservative lawmakers. She advocates fiscal stimulus and resists rapid monetary tightening. If elected, she would become Japan’s first female prime minister.

Koizumi, the current agriculture minister, has gained visibility through his management of food price issues. He appeals to younger members and those seeking generational change. He is also the son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

Two other senior LDP figures, Toshimitsu Motegi and Yoshimasa Hayashi, have also expressed interest in the race. However, neither has gained the same momentum as Takaichi or Koizumi.

The party has scheduled the leadership vote for October 4. Ballots will be cast by LDP lawmakers and dues-paying members across Japan. The winner will automatically become prime minister due to the party’s majority in the lower house.

Observers expect a full campaign with policy debates and media events. Party officials said preparations for candidate registration and debate scheduling are underway.

The LDP leadership race will shape Japan’s political direction on domestic economic policy and international relations. The new leader will be tasked with addressing inflation, energy costs, and restoring public confidence in the government.

Polls and campaign developments will continue to influence the race in the coming weeks. Both Takaichi and Koizumi plan to ramp up campaign activities before voting begins.
