China Plans to Upgrade Eco-Environmental Monitoring with Smart Technologies

Date:

China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment has announced plans to enhance its national ecological monitoring network. By 2027, China aims to implement a new generation of eco-environmental monitoring networks in key regions. These networks will use advanced technologies like unmanned maintenance and smart sampling to improve monitoring accuracy and efficiency.

According to the ministry, by 2030, the eco-environmental monitoring system will undergo a major overhaul. The upgraded network will include aerial, terrestrial, and maritime monitoring, creating a more integrated system. The goal is to develop a “smart brain” that will help manage and analyze environmental data more effectively.

Jiang Huohua, the head of the ministry’s ecological and environmental monitoring department, explained that this transformation marks a significant step toward a digitalized and smarter environmental monitoring system. The new technologies will provide better data collection and analysis capabilities.

For instance, air and water monitoring systems will transition to unmanned operations, which will reduce the need for human intervention. Smart sampling and analysis will enhance the accuracy of these monitoring systems. Biodiversity tracking will also benefit from advanced technologies, including infrared cameras and bird sound recorders. These tools will achieve over 85 percent accuracy in species identification, improving environmental conservation efforts.

Noise monitoring will see similar advancements. Urban sound environment equipment will not only measure decibel levels but will also identify the sources of noise. This added capability will help address urban noise pollution more effectively.

Artificial intelligence and satellite remote sensing will play increasingly significant roles in the eco-environmental monitoring system. The ministry plans to roll out policies to develop environmental protection robots and remote operation tools, further enhancing the system’s capabilities.

With these upgrades, China is positioning itself to lead in the use of smart technologies for environmental protection, aiming for a more sustainable future.
