The Baganuur battery storage power station has delivered 48.7 million kilowatt-hours to the central grid. This milestone highlights the growing importance of battery storage in stabilizing electricity supply.
Located in the 1st khoroo of Baganuur District, the 50-megawatt facility connects to the Baganuur electricity distribution substation. It began feeding power to the central system on December 5, 2024. Since then, it has played a critical role in managing Mongolia’s electricity demand.
The battery storage system stores surplus electricity during low nighttime demand. Then, it releases energy during daytime peak periods. Daily fluctuations between peak and off-peak demand often reach 300 to 400 megawatts, which the station now balances efficiently. Unlike solar or wind generation, battery storage provides a continuous supply regardless of weather conditions.
Experts emphasize that the plant significantly enhances grid stability. At its current capacity, 50 megawatts can supply electricity to roughly 25,000 households for four hours, assuming average household consumption of 2 kilowatt-hours. This feature makes it a vital tool in preventing blackouts during high-demand hours.
The project involved multiple stakeholders, including the local government and the national electricity operator. Their collaboration ensured the battery storage station met technical and safety standards. Officials noted that the project reflects Mongolia’s commitment to modernizing its energy infrastructure.
In addition, the plant demonstrates a shift in energy management. By storing excess electricity and releasing it strategically, the system reduces pressure on traditional power plants. It also supports renewable energy integration, offering a practical solution for future expansion of wind and solar resources.
Looking ahead, authorities plan to expand battery storage capacity in other regions. They aim to further smooth out fluctuations and reduce dependence on fossil fuel generation. Meanwhile, the Baganuur station continues to provide reliable power, setting a benchmark for energy storage projects nationwide.
Overall, the Baganuur battery storage facility shows how modern technology can stabilize grids. It ensures reliable electricity, supports renewable energy, and strengthens Mongolia’s energy security.
