Mongolia is advancing its transport infrastructure with the Bagakhangai railway project. This development engages over 2,500 engineers and specialists from more than 100 domestic enterprises. The Bagakhangai railway will connect key regions while easing freight transport pressures in the capital.
The project spans a total of 151 kilometers and supports axle loads of up to 25 tons. It can carry an average of 3.5 million tons of freight annually. The government approved measures to implement this branch railway, relocate freight terminals, and improve logistics efficiency. As a result, the Bagakhangai railway is expected to reduce heavy truck traffic in the city by nearly half.
The railway line begins at Bagakhangai station in Ulaanbaatar and passes through Sergelen soum of Tuv aimag, reaching the Khushig Valley. The construction follows class III standards, with a gauge of 1,520 millimeters. The plan includes three stations, four sidings, and a 2.5-kilometer bridge structure.
Construction is divided into two phases. The first phase focuses on 87 kilometers from Bagakhangai station to Khushig station. The second phase extends 15 kilometers to Shuvuun Fabrik. Excavation works are almost complete, embankment works are nearing 92 percent, and bridges, culverts, and track-laying are steadily progressing.
Officials emphasize that the new Bagakhangai railway will allow goods to reach Khushig Valley and Orgokh Uul terminals directly. Consequently, freight will bypass Ulaanbaatar city center, improving traffic safety and reducing environmental impact. Currently, the capital relies on more than ten terminals and over 300 branch lines, which causes congestion and pollution.
Industry experts note that the project represents a major step toward modernizing Mongolia’s logistics network. They highlight that a centralized freight system reduces transport costs, limits road damage, and minimizes risks related to hazardous goods.
Looking ahead, the government plans to continue investing in complementary rail projects and infrastructure upgrades. These efforts aim to strengthen national logistics, improve trade efficiency, and support sustainable urban development.
The Bagakhangai railway project demonstrates Mongolia’s commitment to modern transport solutions while addressing urban challenges. By easing freight flow and improving connectivity, it sets a new benchmark for the nation’s railway system.
