Thunder Tiger Drone Gains US Clearance for Military Use

Date:

Taiwan’s Thunder Tiger drone has secured a major milestone by gaining approval for the US Blue UAS Cleared List. This achievement marks the first time a Taiwanese drone manufacturer has met rigorous cybersecurity and military-grade standards. The inclusion highlights the growing importance of the Thunder Tiger drone in both defense and international markets.

The US Department of Defense manages the Blue UAS Cleared List through its Defense Innovation Unit. Drones on this list undergo strict evaluations for security, supply chain reliability, and operational performance. Agencies can procure these drones without further approval. Thunder Tiger drone now joins models from top US and European manufacturers.

Thunder Tiger’s Overkill model, entirely made in Taiwan, delivers a flight endurance of 30 minutes. It reaches a top speed of 120 kph and carries up to 3 kilograms of payload. Moreover, it can navigate tight spaces like rooftops and narrow alleys. These capabilities enhance operational flexibility in urban and complex environments.

Designed for modern combat, the drone integrates AI-powered attack systems and anti-jamming GPS technology. Experts say this ensures reliable performance in high-risk operations, including precision strikes, reconnaissance, and border defense missions. The Thunder Tiger drone positions Taiwan as a competitive player in tactical unmanned systems.

The company emphasized that US approval unlocks procurement opportunities within NATO supply chains. Analysts estimate the potential global market for such drones could reach several hundred thousand units annually. To expand its reach, Thunder Tiger will showcase its technology at the upcoming Association of the US Army exposition in Washington, running October 13-15.

Domestically, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense plans to purchase 48,750 drones between 2026 and 2027. This procurement aims to strengthen asymmetric warfare capabilities against potential threats. Thunder Tiger drone is expected to compete for a significant portion of this contract.

Officials note that the recognition from the US reinforces Taiwan’s strategic position in drone innovation. Observers also suggest that wider international adoption could boost the nation’s defense technology exports. Looking ahead, Thunder Tiger drone may play a pivotal role in both global defense markets and Taiwan’s national security strategy.
