President Lee Jae Myung met United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York to discuss peace efforts on the Korean Peninsula. The meeting coincided with Lee’s attendance at the UN General Assembly.
During talks, Lee emphasized the United Nations’ role in achieving lasting peace. He called for stronger UN support to transition from conflict to dialogue and cooperation between the two Koreas. Moreover, he stressed that peace on the Korean Peninsula directly affects international security.
South Korea Lee urged the UN to back initiatives that increase inter-Korean exchanges and normalize relations. Lee highlighted the importance of denuclearization in creating a stable and secure regional environment. He also mentioned that South Korea will actively lead efforts to foster dialogue and reduce tensions.
Lee pointed out that collaborative solutions between the UN and South Korea can serve as a model for conflict resolution. He said stronger cooperation could address humanitarian challenges and prevent escalations. Furthermore, he emphasized that regional stability requires ongoing international engagement.
This meeting marked the second official encounter between Lee and Guterres. Their first discussions took place at the Group of Seven summit in Canada. During the New York meeting, Guterres praised South Korea as a “trusted partner” in global affairs. He highlighted Seoul’s balanced approach on humanitarian aid, sustainable development goals, human rights, and international conflicts.
Lee reiterated South Korea’s commitment to increasing its role in international diplomacy. He said the country will continue contributing to resolving global challenges, including the Gaza conflict and the war in Ukraine. Additionally, Lee emphasized South Korea’s willingness to act as a mediator when tensions rise in East Asia.
The South Korea Lee urged the UN support initiative reflects a broader strategy of proactive diplomacy.
