China’s National Day Display Shines in Tian’anmen Square

Date:

As China’s National Day approaches, the National Day display in Tian’anmen Square continues to draw attention from residents and tourists. Meanwhile, the towering “Blessings to the Motherland” flower basket attracts crowds even before its official unveiling. Consequently, the National Day display creates a festive atmosphere across the square. In addition, the display combines vivid colors, symbolic flowers, and innovative design to reflect national pride.

The flower basket rises 16 meters and showcases 18 different types of flowers, according to Beijing Municipal Forestry and Parks Bureau representatives. Additionally, the Chinese rose, Beijing’s city flower, takes center stage for the first time. As a result, this festive floral installation conveys messages of peace and hope. Meanwhile, children excitedly point at white doves perched above the blossoms, honoring the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.

Lan Hailang, the chief designer of Tian’anmen and Chang’an Avenue floral displays for 28 years, said the flower basket is a symbolic gift for the nation’s birthday. Furthermore, he added that combining animals and flowers is an artistic innovation, similar to sand art. As a result, the National Day display delivers a visually refreshing effect.

Floral displays in Tian’anmen Square date back to 1984. Over time, they evolved from simple three-dimensional beds to the giant flower basket introduced in 2011. Additionally, Lan noted that each new National Day display takes over six months to develop. During this period, teams work from theme selection to detailed site mapping. They also consider lighting, sun orientation, and viewing angles to maximize visual impact.

Technological improvements have further elevated the festive floral installation. For example, the team now employs 3D printing and scanning to craft precise structures. Similarly, irrigation has moved from traditional water wheels to automated sprinkler systems. In total, over 100 flower varieties are now featured. In addition, nighttime lighting adds a new dimension, allowing visitors to appreciate the celebratory display after dark.

Lan reflected on how the National Day display shows China’s prosperity and societal changes. He explained that seeing visitors’ smiles is the most rewarding part. Therefore, the mix of cultural symbolism, modern technology, and careful design highlights the country’s progress and creativity.

Looking forward, designers will continue innovating, blending tradition with advanced techniques. Consequently, the National Day display will remain a central attraction during the holiday. It also celebrates national pride and artistic achievement.

Ultimately, the National Day display in Tian’anmen Square demonstrates how large-scale public art can combine cultural heritage, innovation, and celebration.
