Wage Increase Boosts Urban Services in Ulaanbaatar

Date:

The wage increase for city and utility workers took center stage during a recent meeting between Ulaanbaatar officials and urban services companies. Mayor and Governor Nyambaatar Khishgee announced annual pay adjustments linked to inflation, marking a significant policy shift for the capital’s public service sector.

The meeting brought together district managers and representatives from companies working in urban maintenance and utility services. Mayor Nyambaatar emphasized the importance of increasing salaries to boost worker morale and service quality. He noted that when he assumed office, the budget for urban services stood at MNT 50 billion. For the upcoming year, the allocation will rise to more than MNT 360 billion.

Officials plan to modernize operations alongside the wage increase. The city is purchasing new cleaning and maintenance equipment directly from manufacturers. Enterprises will receive this equipment through concessional loans, encouraging modernization without placing heavy financial burdens on companies. Mayor Nyambaatar urged companies to place orders for tools and machinery before winter arrives to ensure timely deployment.

The new equipment will allow a single vehicle to handle multiple functions, including snow plowing, garbage collection, and sweeping. Starting next year, city authorities also intend to mechanize the washing of road dividers and barriers. This approach aims to reduce manual labor, improve efficiency, and strengthen urban service quality.

The discussion also covered winter preparations, maintenance of green spaces, and planning for next year’s cleaning services. Officials stressed that with wage increase policies and upgraded equipment, the city will demand higher standards of performance from sector companies. Mayor Nyambaatar underlined that better pay and tools must translate into visible improvements in service delivery.

Experts say this strategy could transform urban service operations in the capital. By linking wages to inflation, the government ensures stable income growth for workers, which could help reduce turnover and attract skilled labor. Increased budget allocations also signal a stronger commitment to modern infrastructure and cleaner urban environments.

In the coming months, authorities will oversee equipment distribution and finalize winter readiness plans. They expect companies to adapt quickly and deliver higher quality services. The wage increase policy, combined with significant investment, sets the stage for a more efficient and accountable urban services sector in Ulaanbaatar.
