China J-35 Stealth Fighter Sets New Standards in Naval Aviation

Date:

China’s J-35 stealth fighter demonstrates world-class capabilities with an exceptionally small radar cross-section, officials say. Consequently, the design gives the aircraft a strategic advantage in detecting and avoiding enemy radar. Furthermore, observers note that J-35 stealth technology enhances China’s military reach and operational flexibility.

Recently, officials highlighted the advanced stealth capabilities of the J-35 fighter in a report on September 28, 2025. In addition, the announcement came after the success of China’s first electromagnetic catapult-equipped aircraft carrier, the Fujian. The carrier also hosted initial takeoff and arrested landing exercises for the J-35 fighter jet, the J-15T, and the KJ-600 aircraft.

Experts explain that the J-35 fighter’s advanced stealth allows it to achieve a radar cross-section smaller than a human palm, about the size of a sparrow. Therefore, Wang Ya’nan, chief editor of Aerospace Knowledge magazine, said the aircraft can remain undetected until very close to its target. This ability, in turn, enhances its combat effectiveness and survivability in modern warfare.

In addition to its stealth capabilities, the J-35 fighter carries a maximum takeoff weight close to 30 tons. It uses two medium-thrust engines developed entirely in China. As a result, Wang noted that the aircraft approaches the heavy fighter category. Thanks to the electromagnetic catapult, the J-35 jet can also launch fully loaded with fuel and munitions. Consequently, it achieves longer range, greater endurance, and stronger firepower.

The J-35 fighter series includes multiple variants for naval and air force operations. The carrier-based model tested on the Fujian derives from the J-35A, which debuted at Airshow China 2024. In addition, Wang Yongqing, chief designer at the Shenyang Aircraft Design and Research Institute, explained that sharing technologies across variants reduces both development costs and time.

Furthermore, this development model allows J-35 stealth jets to be produced in larger numbers. As a result, higher production lowers maintenance costs and improves logistical efficiency. Experts emphasize that, overall, combining stealth, firepower, and modular design strengthens China’s long-term defense strategy.

Looking ahead, officials plan to continue testing the J-35 fighter and expand its operational deployments. Analysts suggest that these advancements will, in turn, strengthen China’s carrier-based capabilities and modernize its multirole fighter fleet.

Overall, the J-35 fighter highlights China’s progress in indigenous aerospace technology. By combining advanced stealth, heavy payload capacity, and versatile carrier operations, the J-35 series strengthens both capability and strategic flexibility.
