Hualien flood recovery continues as authorities discovered a woman’s body inside a vehicle near a quarry in Guangfu Township. The discovery comes 14 days after severe flooding from a breached Mataian River barrier lake on September 23. As a result, the death toll from the disaster now stands at 19.
Chien Hung-cheng, commander of the Hualien County Fire Department Urban Search and Rescue team, reported that rescuers found the vehicle buried under approximately one story of mud and debris. He confirmed the car belongs to the missing quarry site owner.
In addition, local police and firefighters coordinated with quarry staff to excavate the vehicle. They deployed four excavators to recover the body safely. Authorities will confirm the victim’s identity once they retrieve the body.
Previously, the barrier lake breach claimed 18 lives and left six people missing. Consequently, the disaster caused extensive damage to homes, roads, and local infrastructure.
Furthermore, Central Emergency Operation Center chief coordinator Chi Lien-cheng announced that military personnel and equipment will shift operations to Fozu Street starting today. He added that mud and debris on roads and in homes are almost fully cleared.
Moreover, authorities have cleared roughly one-third of ditches in urban areas, and they expect full completion between Friday and next Wednesday. Meanwhile, household water and electricity services have already been restored.
Officials emphasized that the Hualien flood recovery demonstrates coordinated efforts between emergency services, local authorities, and the military. Additionally, they noted that continued cleanup will prevent secondary hazards such as water contamination and blocked drainage.
