Mongolia saw a sharp rise in hay and forage production during the 2025 harvest season. The country achieved record-high outputs. This marked a major milestone in its agricultural sector. The growth reflects strong efforts to boost crop yields and improve food security.
By September 2025, Mongolia had harvested 120.2 thousand tons of grain. It also produced 60.6 thousand tons of potatoes and nearly 100 thousand tons of vegetables. However, hay and forage outputs stood out the most. The country prepared 595.8 thousand tons of hay and 9.3 thousand tons of forage. These numbers show major gains compared to last year.
Several aimags played key roles in this outcome. For example, Khuvsgul, Orkhon, Bulgan, Tuv, and Selenge contributed 3.9% to 48.5% of total grain output. Meanwhile, potato production came mainly from Bayan-Ulgii, Uvurkhangai, Khovd, Selenge, and Tuv. Their share ranged from 4% to 38% of the total harvest. Similarly, vegetables were mostly grown in Orkhon, Tuv, Khovd, Darkhan-Uul, and Selenge. These regions produced 2.9% to 33.6% of national output.
Zavkhan, Bulgan, Uvurkhangai, Tuv, and Khentii led in forage production. Together, they contributed between 8% and 26.1% of the total. Experts say better farming techniques and favorable weather helped drive these results. Compared to 2024, hay production increased by 193.1 thousand tons. Forage output also rose by 1.3 thousand tons. These gains strengthen Mongolia’s agriculture and support its vital livestock sector.
Government officials praised the harvest. They stressed the need for continued investment in modern farming and rural development. Specialists also called for more crop diversity to ensure long-term food supply. This surge in hay and forage will benefit rural communities. More fodder improves livestock health and productivity. As a result, farmers earn more, and the pastoral lifestyle remains strong.
Looking ahead, the government plans to support farmers and expand agricultural technologies. Officials aim to build on this success and ensure lasting food security. In summary, Mongolia’s 2025 harvest stands out for record hay and forage production. This shows real progress in agriculture and potential for sustainable growth.
