China-France relations took a step forward as top diplomats met in Hangzhou for the 27th Strategic Dialogue. Wang Yi, China’s top diplomat, co-chaired the talks with Emmanuel Bonne, diplomatic adviser to the French President. The meeting focused on deepening bilateral cooperation, boosting multilateral coordination, and addressing global challenges.
Wang highlighted that over the past year, China-France relations achieved progress through high-level exchanges and practical cooperation. He stressed that both nations, as permanent UN Security Council members, should build a more stable and forward-looking partnership. Wang emphasized that strengthening strategic mutual trust and expanding collaboration in both traditional and emerging sectors would serve the long-term interests of both peoples.
Bonne reaffirmed France’s commitment to independent diplomacy and the one-China policy. He expressed France’s intent to strengthen practical cooperation with China in economy, trade, civil nuclear energy, science, technology, and new energy. Bonne also opposed trade wars and camp-based confrontations, underscoring a cooperative approach in international relations.
During the dialogue, Wang called for China-France relations to guide broader China-EU cooperation. He noted that France could promote EU strategic autonomy and a balanced perception of China. Bonne indicated France’s readiness to play a constructive role in enhancing EU-China dialogue and cooperation.
The diplomats also discussed pressing global issues, including the Ukraine crisis, the Middle East situation, and reforming the global governance system. Both sides agreed that multilateral coordination and mutual support were essential for maintaining international stability.
