Taiwan-US Relations Strengthen Ahead of Trump-Xi APEC Meeting

Date:

Taiwan-US relations are growing stronger as Taipei intensifies coordination with Washington before the upcoming Trump-Xi meeting at the APEC summit in South Korea. The discussions between the US and China are expected to cover Taiwan, a key issue in global diplomacy.

Wang Liang-yu, Director-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ North American Affairs Department, said Taiwan maintains constant contact with US officials. She stressed that Taipei will keep safeguarding national interests while deepening cooperation with Washington.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry closely tracks every major exchange between Washington and Beijing. Wang explained that Taiwan maintains smooth communication channels with the US to monitor developments that may affect regional stability.

President Donald Trump confirmed that Taiwan will be among the main topics when he meets Chinese President Xi Jinping. He mentioned other issues such as rare earths, fentanyl, and trade disputes.

Trump expressed confidence that China will not resort to military action against Taiwan. He said the US remains the world’s strongest military power and that Beijing clearly understands this position.

However, uncertainty persists. The US continues its policy of strategic ambiguity, designed to deter both Chinese aggression and unilateral moves toward independence by Taipei. Since taking office, Trump has avoided stating whether the US would defend Taiwan in case of an attack.

Former President Joe Biden had promised to defend Taiwan but later softened his stance through clarifications from his administration.

Analysts say Taipei’s current strategy emphasizes closer Taiwan-US relations and stability in the Taiwan Strait. They note that Taiwan aims to ensure its security and democratic values remain central in future US-China negotiations.

As the APEC summit nears, international focus on Taiwan-US relations is intensifying. Taipei plans to leverage its ties with Washington to maintain balance in the Indo-Pacific region and strengthen its global role.

Through steady Taiwan-US relations, Taiwan hopes to protect its sovereignty, promote peace, and sustain a leading voice in regional diplomacy.
