China delivered its first self-developed large dual-fuel RoPax ship for export, marking a milestone in clean-energy maritime innovation. The vessel, built by Guangzhou Shipyard under China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), arrived in Nansha, Guangzhou Province. This dual-fuel ship strengthens China’s role in green shipbuilding and global maritime technology.
The 12-deck vessel includes 485 cabins and can carry 1,800 passengers and over 550 cars. It also features a buffet restaurant, café, and observation lounge. Moreover, it serves short-distance routes between islands or coastal cities. Its interior uses entirely domestic materials.
The LNG power system stores about 1,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas. Consequently, the ship can sail for roughly five days without refueling. After delivery, the ship will operate on the Genoa-Palermo route in Italy.
A Guangzhou Shipyard representative emphasized that the vessel combines high technology, clean energy, and local production. This achievement reflects China’s industrial strength.
Industry experts highlighted the strategic significance. Bian Yongzu, executive deputy editor-in-chief of Modernization of Management magazine, said, “Shipping is entering a clean-energy era. Dual-fuel vessels will reduce emissions, lower costs, and accelerate sustainability.” He added that China produces nearly 60 percent of global shipbuilding, which makes it a critical driver of maritime transformation.
Data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) confirmed China’s dominance. From January to September 2025, the country completed 38.53 million deadweight tons, up 6 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, new orders totaled 66.60 million DWT, down 23.5 percent, while order backlog rose to 242.24 million DWT, a 25.3 percent increase.
Bian noted that achieving this progress requires both a strong industrial base and technological expertise. Therefore, China’s advances in fully localized, dual-fuel RoPax ships showcase its readiness to lead global sustainable shipping.
China’s delivery of the dual-fuel RoPax ship highlights its commitment to innovation, clean energy, and maritime leadership. Furthermore, it sets a benchmark for future international exports.
