Summit Security Intensified in Gyeongju Ahead of APEC Leaders’ Meeting

Date:

South Korean authorities have significantly strengthened summit security in Gyeongju ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting. Summit security is now at its highest level as key international figures prepare to attend. The city, located in the southeast, will host the summit on Friday and Saturday.

Officials reported that up to 18,500 police personnel will be deployed daily at the Bomun Tourist Complex. The security will involve anti-drone systems, armored vehicles, and helicopters to maintain a strict security perimeter. Authorities aim to create a secure “vacuum zone” around the main venue and nearby hotels.

Additionally, a three-tier security system will operate, covering close, middle, and outer perimeters around VIPs. Military authorities will contribute roughly 1,800 troops to assist police in maintaining summit security. Firefighting agencies have prepared a situation room and will deploy 1,352 personnel along with 203 vehicles and pieces of equipment.

Steel fences now line the sidewalks near Hwabaek International Convention Center, the summit’s main site, restricting public access. Hotels hosting foreign delegates are also enclosed by two-meter-high screen fences. These precautions demonstrate South Korea’s determination to ensure summit security.

Experts note that large-scale security measures for international events are crucial to prevent disruptions and potential threats. The security not only protects delegates but also ensures smooth logistics for attendees and media coverage. Authorities emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts between police, military, and emergency services to maintain public safety.

In recent years, security at global economic forums has become increasingly complex, requiring advanced planning, technology, and personnel deployment. The measures in Gyeongju reflect South Korea’s commitment to protecting participants and upholding international standards. Summit security will remain in effect throughout the event, with officials conducting continuous monitoring and adjustments as necessary.

Authorities have urged the public to follow guidelines and cooperate with security checks while attending areas near the summit venues. They also highlighted that these measures will leave a lasting legacy in Gyeongju for managing future international events.

Summit security in Gyeongju marks a major step in South Korea’s preparedness for hosting high-profile international conferences safely and efficiently.
