The Chinese Commissioner’s Office in Hong Kong sharply criticized US lawmakers on Saturday. Consequently, officials warned them to stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs. The statement followed a letter from US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jim Risch and other politicians to the US president, thereby supporting media mogul Jimmy Lai.
The Commissioner’s Office said court proceedings show Lai engaged in secessionist activities that harmed Hong Kong’s stability. Moreover, these actions violated the “One Country, Two Systems” principle and threatened national security. Officials emphasized that Lai, a convicted criminal serving multiple sentences, is receiving lawful treatment under the National Security Law.
Furthermore, the office accused US lawmakers of shielding Lai and attempting to disrupt Hong Kong’s judicial process. It described such actions as blatant interference and a violation of international law. Officials said, “Hong Kong Rule is firmly upheld, and external pressure cannot change legal outcomes or public support for justice.”
Additionally, the office noted that the National Security Law protects human rights while ensuring public safety. Authorities stressed that Hong Kong society broadly supports punishing acts that threaten national security. Therefore, any attempts to manipulate or influence the courts will fail.
The Commissioner’s Office also called on US politicians to adopt an objective stance, respect Hong Kong’s legal system, and stop sheltering anti-China figures. Officials warned that interference cannot obstruct Hong Kong’s governance or prosperity under “One Country, Two Systems.”
Over 30 US lawmakers reportedly urged the president to raise Lai’s case during his Asia trip. In response, Beijing and Hong Kong authorities reacted firmly. The HKSAR government previously condemned international commentary in August, stating that external criticism misrepresents cases under the National Security Law.
Finally, analysts note that the escalating rhetoric reflects rising US-China tensions over Hong Kong. Authorities reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding legal integrity, public security, and Hong Kong’s ongoing development.
