China’s recent intimidation drills near Taiwan have intensified regional tensions and drawn strong condemnation from Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND). The intimidation drills featured Chinese H-6K bombers and J-10 fighters flying close to Taiwan’s airspace, just days before key U.S.-China talks in South Korea.
According to Chinese state media, the People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theatre Command carried out combat-oriented training to test air blockade and precision strike capabilities. The intimidation drills, involving several nuclear-capable bombers, appeared designed to demonstrate military strength and political resolve.
However, Taiwan’s defense ministry swiftly condemned the exercises. Officials stated that China aimed to manipulate public opinion and create fear among citizens. “These intimidation drills represent psychological warfare,” an MND spokesperson said. “We urge citizens to stay united, defend democracy, and protect our homeland.”
Meanwhile, the MND’s latest report showed only routine Chinese military activity near Taiwan. It tracked four aircraft—three fighters and one support plane—within 24 hours. Therefore, defense officials believe the drills happened earlier and were later publicized for maximum psychological impact.
In addition, Chinese state television released video footage showing simulated bomb drops. It claimed that pilots could “see Taiwan’s coast,” although the video provided no clear evidence. The broadcast emphasized that China would continue defending national sovereignty and territorial integrity “through concrete actions.”
Furthermore, the timing of these intimidation drills raised concern in diplomatic circles. They occurred as U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping prepared to meet at the APEC summit. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reassured Taiwan, saying the island should not fear the talks and reaffirmed America’s commitment to regional peace.
Analysts argue that China used the intimidation drills to apply political pressure on Taipei while testing U.S. reactions. As a result, experts warn that such tactics could increase the risk of miscalculation in the Taiwan Strait.
Ultimately, Taiwan’s government pledged to maintain calm and unity. Officials stressed that the nation will counter China’s intimidation drills with resilience, strategic communication, and strengthened international partnerships.
