EXO Comeback Dispute Escalates

Date:

Three EXO members, Baekhyun, Xiumin, and Chen, remain embroiled in an EXO comeback dispute with SM Entertainment over participation in the group’s full-member comeback. The dispute could affect the upcoming EXO album and fan events, creating uncertainty around the band’s planned activities.

The trio, operating under the subunit project ChenBaekXi, have expressed their willingness to join EXO’s full-group promotions. INB100, the subunit’s agency, said on Wednesday that the members “plan to reach an agreement for full-group activities as early as possible.” They emphasized the trio’s commitment to fans and the band.

SM Entertainment, however, maintained that the trio cannot participate until they fulfill terms from a prior agreement. SM explained that the members must pay 10 percent of revenue from individual activities to resolve the dispute. The company stressed that participation in team projects requires both agreement fulfillment and efforts to restore trust.

Earlier this week, SM confirmed that EXO will resume activities at year-end after members completed military service. The company announced a December fan meet-and-greet and an eighth album release next year but plans to proceed with only six members, excluding Baekhyun, Xiumin, and Chen.

The legal dispute stems from the trio’s decision to let their exclusive contracts expire in 2023. They cited SM’s alleged failure to provide settlement data and filed complaints with the Fair Trade Commission. Subsequent agreements allowed the trio to manage solo activities through INB100 while maintaining group participation. SM countersued for the 10 percent revenue share, while the trio pursued unpaid settlements.

The dispute also involves criminal complaints against SM executives and regulatory filings with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Despite mediation attempts, litigation resumed earlier this month after talks failed.

INB100 insisted the trio accepted SM’s proposed terms and intended to participate in EXO’s comeback. SM disputed this, noting the members filed an objection on October 16 and accusing them of misrepresenting facts.

Industry observers note that the EXO comeback dispute illustrates growing tensions between K-pop idols and agencies over contract management. Fans remain concerned about the band’s full-member activities, with the dispute potentially affecting album sales, promotions, and public appearances.

As the legal battle continues, both parties face pressure to resolve the EXO comeback dispute quickly to ensure smooth group promotions and maintain fan trust.
