Food Security in Mongolia Boosts Domestic Production

Date:

President of Mongolia Khurelsukh Ukhnaa visited national manufacturing enterprises this week as part of the National Movement for Food Security. The visits highlight domestic production achievements and promote self-sufficiency. Food Security is a top priority under the campaign.

The President first visited Tumen Shuvuut JSC’s Agro Feed plant. There, he met Chairman L. Erkhembayar and CEO J. Bold. They briefed him on new equipment, facilities, and operational improvements.

Tumen Shuvuut JSC commissioned its “Tumen Shuvuut-2” plant last year using a long-term concessional loan. As a result, the company plans to produce 170 million eggs this year. Next year, production will reach 250 million eggs. Consequently, this output will meet 40 percent of domestic demand this year. By 2026, it aims to cover 50 percent.

The feed plant supplies 25 poultry farms across 21 provinces. Furthermore, production is expected to reach 40,000 tons this year and 55,000 tons next year. The company purchased 38,000 tons of locally grown wheat, bran, and oats this year. Moreover, plans call for 53,000 tons by 2026. Additionally, executives introduced a Dorper sheep breeding project for meat production.

Founded in 2004, Tumen Shuvuut JSC employs 360 workers and operates four subsidiary plants. In addition, it produces 17 types of packaged eggs, 10 animal feeds, and organic fertilizer from poultry manure. The company has over 19,000 shareholders and distributed MNT 10 billion in dividends between 2019 and 2023.

Before 2020, Mongolia imported more than half of its egg supply. Meanwhile, domestic producers relied on outdated equipment. Since the Food Security campaign launched in 2022, enterprise numbers, capacity, and production have grown. Over the next two years, more than 30 poultry farms will raise 3 million birds. Consequently, production will reach 650 million eggs annually. This will allow Mongolia to meet 80 percent of domestic demand this year. Full self-sufficiency is expected next year.

President Khurelsukh praised enterprises and wealth creators for their commitment and results. To date, more than 3,000 enterprises have received MNT 1.2 trillion in concessional loans under the campaign.

Overall, the Food Security initiative emphasizes sustainable growth, modernization, and self-reliance. In addition, officials expect continued expansion of production across 19 key food products. Therefore, this will strengthen Mongolia’s food independence and long-term economic stability.
