Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung thanked US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for their support of Taiwan Strait peace. The statement followed their summit in Tokyo, which highlighted the importance of regional stability ahead of Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea.
The Tokyo meeting marked the first time Takaichi and Trump met since she became prime minister. Takaichi has urged the world to unite in preserving peace and curbing authoritarian expansion. She repeated this message at the ASEAN and East Asia Summits earlier this week, reaffirming her focus on Taiwan Strait peace.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs praised Japan’s leadership and commitment to stability. It said Tokyo’s actions show clear support for cross-strait peace, which is essential for global prosperity. The ministry also emphasized that Taiwan remains a responsible Indo-Pacific partner focused on strengthening self-defense and cooperation with allies.
The Presidential Office also expressed optimism about the upcoming Trump-Xi summit. Spokeswoman Karen Kuo said Taiwan supports dialogue that lowers tensions and enhances Taiwan Strait peace. She added that Washington’s consistent backing of Taiwan’s democracy demonstrates a strong, ongoing partnership.
During his meeting with Takaichi, Trump reaffirmed US opposition to unilateral attempts to change the status quo. Both leaders agreed that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are crucial for the region. Their statements reflected the continued international consensus on maintaining calm and preventing escalation.
National Security Bureau Director-General Tsai Ming-yen said the Trump-Xi meeting would focus on trade and managing strategic competition. He explained that both sides are expected to first address issues like fentanyl control and rare earth exports before tackling deeper disputes.
Tsai noted that while progress is possible, structural differences between the US and China remain. He emphasized that these tensions, especially around technology and security, will not be easily resolved.
He also confirmed that Taiwan’s interests will not become bargaining tools. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has already assured allies that Washington will stand firm on Taiwan’s autonomy.
Taiwan plans to keep close coordination with both Washington and Tokyo. Officials believe deeper trilateral cooperation will strengthen the Indo-Pacific’s security and ensure a future of lasting regional peace.
