Elder financial protection has become a priority in Taiwan as the aging population grows. Taipei Fubon Bank has partnered with One-Forty, a nonprofit focused on migrant education, to address this issue. Together, they co-hosted a bilingual financial literacy workshop aimed at preventing fraud among seniors.
The workshop utilized a board game called “Abundant Life,” which is now available in both Mandarin and Indonesian. The game-based format helps raise financial awareness and fraud prevention skills for both migrant workers and elderly citizens. This collaborative approach marks a shift in how to fight financial fraud. According to a 2024 survey by Taipei Fubon Bank and One-Forty, one in ten foreign caregivers in Taiwan has witnessed seniors falling victim to fraud.
Migrant caregivers spend significant time with the elderly. Therefore, they are often the first to notice signs of financial scams. Kevin Chen, founder of One-Forty, emphasized the importance of empowering caregivers to detect scams early. He noted that caregivers’ warnings are often ignored, even though they are in the best position to protect the elderly from fraud. By strengthening the caregivers’ ability to recognize scams and build trust, the initiative aims to combat fraud more effectively.
The bilingual “Abundant Life” game includes financial concepts like investment products and risk management. It also incorporates tools for dementia screening. Additionally, the game presents real-world scam scenarios, such as fake investments and lottery fraud. The game features elements of Indonesian culture, which helps bridge cultural gaps between migrant workers and seniors.
More than 30 people attended the inaugural workshop. The interactive environment encouraged sharing experiences and building mutual trust. Emily Yang, Senior Associate General Manager of Branding and Sustainability at Taipei Fubon Bank, explained that the initiative aligns with the bank’s mission of inclusive finance. She stated, “This shared learning experience helps create a safety net for both migrant caregivers and elders, protecting them from fraud.”
Looking ahead, Taipei Fubon Bank will offer free access to the game at One-Forty’s service centers. This initiative will help extend fraud awareness into the community. Through these efforts, both migrant workers and seniors can strengthen their financial security. Elder financial protection is now a shared goal, with migrant workers playing a central role in its success.
