South Korean President Lee Jae Myung emphasized global resilience during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg on Saturday. He outlined South Korea’s commitment to addressing climate change, natural disasters, and food insecurity worldwide.
Lee stressed that South Korea seeks to act as a responsible partner in strengthening global resilience. He said that coordinated investment in renewable energy and disaster-resistant infrastructure is critical to mitigating future risks.
He presented South Korea’s “Energy Highway” initiative, which expands renewable energy while sharing benefits with participating contributors. Lee emphasized that these programs could foster economic growth and sustainability simultaneously.
Additionally, Lee highlighted South Korea’s international disaster risk reduction projects, such as flood early warning systems, and food assistance programs, including the “K-Rice Belt initiative” across 14 African nations. These projects aim to enhance resilience globally.
“One nation’s resilience contributes to the world’s resilience,” Lee said, underscoring the need for collective international action. He also quoted, “Rain does not fall on one roof alone,” to stress solidarity.
On trade, Lee called for a predictable investment environment and WTO revitalization to encourage sustainable global growth. He emphasized multilateralism and open trade as key components of international stability.
Lee held bilateral meetings with several world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, to elevate relations to a strategic partnership. Discussions covered defense, artificial intelligence, and space technology cooperation.
During a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Lee discussed lessons from Germany’s reunification and their applicability to South Korea. He stressed learning from Germany’s experience in overcoming national division.
Lee also presided over a MIKTA meeting with Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey, and Australia to promote collaboration between developed and developing nations. Participants agreed to involve civil society and youth in global governance discussions.
After the G20 Summit, Lee and First Lady Kim Hea Kyung will continue their diplomatic tour with a state visit to Turkey. South Korea’s engagement highlights its dedication to fostering global resilience and multilateral cooperation.
