The United Nations’ aviation agency has rejected North Korea’s drone claim involving alleged South Korean infiltration. A South Korean foreign ministry official confirmed the decision on Thursday.
North Korea submitted the formal complaint to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) earlier this year. The regime demanded an investigation into alleged drone activity in its airspace from South Korea last October.
However, during an ICAO Council meeting held on April 1, members concluded that North Korea’s drone claim required no further action. The council reached this consensus after a closed-door session. The 36-member council includes South Korea as one of its representatives.
North Korea alleged that South Korean drones had entered Pyongyang’s airspace to drop propaganda materials. South Korea neither confirmed nor denied the accusations at the time. Despite the lack of verification, Pyongyang insisted the incident endangered its sovereignty.
South Korea strongly criticized the move. Seoul accused Pyongyang of trying to politicize the ICAO by misusing international platforms for propaganda. Officials in Seoul also emphasized that international bodies must remain neutral and technical, especially in sensitive matters like airspace violations.
Even though ICAO rules require discussions on issues raised by member states, the council ultimately rejected the North Korea’s drone claim. No official action or further inquiry followed the meeting.
This incident is not the first time North Korea has tried to use international organizations to spotlight inter-Korean tensions. Still, the ICAO’s decision reinforces the need for evidence-based procedures in global aviation matters.
Both South and North Korea are active ICAO member states. Yet, they remain locked in ongoing disputes over border incidents, airspace concerns, and propaganda activities.
North Korea’s drone claim has now joined a list of unproven accusations dismissed by international agencies.
