Mongolia reaffirmed its nuclear security cooperation during a high-level meeting between Foreign Minister Battsetseg Batmunkh and IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi in Vienna. The discussion highlighted Mongolia’s long-term commitment to global non-proliferation and responsible nuclear governance.
Minister Battsetseg emphasized Mongolia’s concerns about rising global risks and stressed the importance of continued nuclear security cooperation. She said Mongolia remains fully committed to strengthening peace, stability, and international confidence through transparent nuclear policies.
She also noted that Mongolia declared its territory a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in 1992, reinforcing its responsible approach. Officials believe this status continues to support regional stability and enhances the country’s global reputation.
Director General Grossi commended Mongolia’s steady engagement in nuclear safety and its contributions to broader global security. He welcomed the country’s ratification of major nuclear safety agreements and highlighted its strong compliance record.
Both sides reviewed Mongolia’s long partnership with the agency, which began when the country joined the IAEA in 1973. Since then, Mongolia has completed more than 100 national projects through the IAEA Technical Cooperation Programme.
These projects have supported critical sectors such as health, agriculture, mining, environment, and scientific research. Officials said the programme demonstrates the practical value of sustained cooperation and long-term institutional trust.
The two leaders also discussed expanding peaceful nuclear applications to support Mongolia’s development priorities. They explored opportunities in medical technology, environmental monitoring, and energy-related innovation.
Experts note that Mongolia’s active diplomacy reflects a rising focus on multilateral engagement and reliable nuclear partnerships. They say consistent cooperation helps reduce regional risks and strengthens the global non-proliferation framework.
At the end of the meeting, the IAEA expressed strong interest in deepening collaboration with Mongolia. Minister Battsetseg invited Director General Grossi to visit Mongolia and continue discussions on future cooperation.
