South Korea Confirms Two New Avian Flu Cases Raising Total to 10 This Season

Date:

South Korea reported two additional highly pathogenic avian influenza infections on Wednesday, bringing the season’s total to 10 confirmed cases. Officials detected the new outbreaks at a layer chicken farm in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, and in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province.

Authorities immediately restricted access to the affected farms, culled infected birds, and launched epidemiological investigations. They also urged surrounding farms to tighten biosecurity and quarantine measures to stop the avian flu outbreak from spreading further.

This season, the avian flu outbreak has affected multiple regions, forcing authorities to monitor farm movements and disinfect transport vehicles. Officials have limited farm visits to reduce the risk of transmission.

“Farmers must strengthen quarantine measures to prevent the disease from reaching neighboring farms, especially in Gyeonggi and South Chungcheong,” said an agriculture ministry official. Authorities stressed that early detection and rapid containment remain critical to protecting the poultry sector.

The outbreak carries both economic and public health risks. Poultry farmers face financial losses from culling operations, while authorities work to protect live poultry markets. Experts note that migratory birds and seasonal weather can accelerate virus transmission, requiring constant monitoring.

The government plans to maintain strict control of transport routes, enforce protective measures, and continue epidemiological tracking. Farms must report any unusual poultry deaths immediately to prevent new cases of the avian flu outbreak.

With winter migration underway, experts warn poultry operations nationwide to stay vigilant. The government has allocated rapid response teams and coordinates with regional veterinary authorities to minimize risks.
