Taiwan and EU Hold High-Level Trade and Investment Dialogue in Brussels

Date:

Taiwan and EU officials convened a high-level Trade and Investment Dialogue in Brussels on Friday, focusing on economic security and semiconductor supply chain resilience. The meeting marked the highest-level platform for Taiwan EU economic cooperation to date.

The dialogue was co-hosted by Taiwan’s Minister of Economic Affairs Kung Ming-hsin and Sabine Weyand, director-general for Trade and Economic Security at the European Commission. Officials discussed global supply chain diversification, technology development, and international competitiveness.

Minister Kung emphasized Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to strengthen manufacturing capabilities and maintain global supply chain stability. He outlined Taiwan’s strategy to reinforce technological leadership while encouraging sustainable economic growth.

During the dialogue, participants addressed climate-related trade measures, global steel overcapacity, and additional commercial concerns. These discussions reflected growing attention on supply chain resilience amid geopolitical uncertainties.

In parallel meetings, Minister Kung met with Kerstin Jorna, the European Commission’s director-general for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship, and SMEs, to discuss industrial policy and potential collaboration opportunities. The talks aimed to identify practical areas for investment and trade expansion between Taiwan and EU member states.

While in Brussels, Minister Kung also met Taiwanese business representatives to review local operations, assess challenges, and explore potential government support. These engagements reinforced Taiwan EU efforts to strengthen investment links and enhance bilateral cooperation.

Trade data shows the EU is Taiwan’s fourth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$68.7 billion last year. In addition, the EU remains Taiwan’s largest foreign investor, with cumulative investment totaling US$59.5 billion since 1952. These figures demonstrate the depth of economic interconnection between the two sides.

Experts say the Taiwan EU dialogue strengthens mutual understanding and prepares both sides for future challenges in technology, trade, and supply chain security. Analysts noted that ongoing high-level engagement may facilitate broader industrial coordination and resilience planning.

Officials concluded the dialogue by emphasizing the importance of continuous cooperation. Both Taiwan and EU representatives pledged to maintain momentum in trade, investment, and semiconductor supply chain collaboration. The event signals a clear commitment to deepening economic ties between Taiwan and the EU while promoting regional stability.
