Seoul Issues First Heat Wave Emergency Warning

Date:

Seoul received its first-ever heat wave emergency warning Monday as extreme temperatures spread westward nationwide. The Korea Meteorological Administration issued this alert for Tuesday, forecasting perceived temperatures exceeding 38 degrees Celsius. Consequently, daytime highs are expected to surpass 39 degrees across affected metropolitan areas.

This warning represents the highest level within Korea’s official heat alert classification system currently. Specifically, it covers all Seoul districts south of the Han River, including Gangnam-gu. Additionally, the warning extends to Osan, Hanam and western Yeoju within Gyeonggi Province.

According to KMA Administrator Lee Mi-seon, this newly introduced heat wave emergency signals exceptionally dangerous conditions nationwide. Even healthy individuals now face significantly increased risk of serious heat-related illness or death. Therefore, authorities strongly recommend suspending nonessential outdoor work throughout affected regions immediately.

Furthermore, officials advise residents to relocate toward air-conditioned spaces or designated cooling shelters promptly. Meanwhile, authorities plan stepped-up safety checks specifically targeting vulnerable households across the capital region. Previously, this severe warning level applied mainly to southeastern provinces experiencing record-breaking temperatures.

Notably, Yangsan recorded a national high of 42.5 degrees Celsius just one day earlier. According to meteorologists, easterly winds carried this intense heat westward toward Seoul and surrounding areas. Consequently, high temperatures are expected to persist overnight, offering little relief for residents.

A KMA official emphasized that accumulated daytime heat will likely continue impacting nighttime conditions significantly. Therefore, officials urge metropolitan residents to monitor weather updates and stay properly hydrated. Additionally, getting sufficient rest remains crucial during this unprecedented heat wave emergency affecting Seoul specifically.

Looking ahead, authorities expect elevated temperatures to persist across the capital region in coming days. Given this unprecedented alert level, officials anticipate closer monitoring and expanded public health measures nationwide. Ultimately, this heat wave emergency underscores growing concerns about extreme weather affecting Korea’s most populous region.
