Avian Influenza Suspect Detained in Taichung Egg Farm Case

Date:

A Taichung egg farm operator was detained after authorities discovered illegal disposal of dead chickens during an avian influenza outbreak. Prosecutors held the operator, surnamed Yun, incommunicado after the Taichung District Court approved his detention for violating the Waste Disposal Act and committing fraud.

Yun runs Fengkang Egg Ranch in Fengyuan District, where chickens showed avian influenza symptoms on January 10. Thousands of birds died between January 10 and last Monday, prompting city authorities to respond quickly. Investigators found Yun hid the outbreak and buried some chickens at his residence while transporting others to Miaoli County for unauthorized burial on land owned by a second suspect, surnamed Yen.

Prosecutors searched Yun’s farm and residence and questioned Yun, two employees, and Yen to uncover the scope of illegal dumping. Yun faces charges for violating the Waste Disposal Act and committing fraud. Authorities released Yen on NT$200,000 bail but barred him from moving while continuing the investigation.

City officials confirmed they contained the outbreak. They culled all chickens at the farm and destroyed large quantities of eggs, feed, and bedding to prevent further spread. Officials also warned other farm operators to follow disease-control protocols and dispose of infected birds safely.

Experts said illegal disposal of avian influenza-infected chickens could contaminate soil and water, posing serious public health risks. Authorities urged stricter biosecurity measures and regular inspections to prevent similar outbreaks.

The case shows the legal and environmental consequences of mishandling infected poultry. Analysts warned such violations could reduce consumer confidence and disrupt the poultry supply chain. Prosecutors plan to continue investigating whether additional charges apply to other individuals involved.

Looking ahead, Taichung authorities will monitor poultry farms closely and enforce strict penalties for violations. They also plan training programs on disease containment and proper waste disposal to reduce avian influenza risks.
