Taiwan’s annual flower industry output is valued at about NT$18 billion, with orchids contributing NT$6.8 billion, including NT$800 million from domestic sales. The United States is Taiwan’s largest export market for orchids, accounting for roughly 30% of exports, followed by Japan and Vietnam. Officials plan to expand exports to Canada and Australia this year.
Local growers have faced challenges from U.S. tariffs and competition from China. In response, they have upgraded breeding and production technologies and developed customized orchid varieties to maintain competitiveness.
Houbi District in Tainan is a major production area for moth orchids, covering one-third of the nation’s cultivation area. The district houses multiple orchid greenhouses and variety developers. Taiwan Sugar Corp. also operates an orchid farm in the district, producing flowers for export markets.
During the Tainan orchid show, the city will highlight orchid displays, local agricultural products, and lantern exhibitions at Jingliao Old Street. Organizers said the event will strengthen both tourism and trade while showcasing Tainan’s unique horticultural expertise.
