China Rejects US Accusation of Nuclear Explosive Tests as Groundless

Date:

China has firmly rejected US accusations that it conducted a nuclear explosive test. Chinese officials called the claim groundless and politically motivated. Li Song, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations in Vienna. He said the US accusation has no factual basis. He added that Washington is trying to create excuses to resume its own nuclear testing.

US Under Secretary of State Thomas DiNanno raised the accusation at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. He claimed China carried out a nuclear explosive test in June 2020. However, Robert Floyd, executive secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), quickly responded. He said the CTBTO’s International Monitoring System did not detect any event linked to a nuclear weapon test at that time.

Li said this statement clearly proves the US accusation is false. He described the US move as irresponsible and politically driven. Li also met with Floyd on Tuesday. During the meeting, he firmly rejected the US claims. He also reaffirmed China’s strong support for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).

China was one of the first countries to sign the CTBT. In 1996, China announced a voluntary moratorium on nuclear testing. Since then, China has honored that commitment. Li stressed that China has never violated its obligations.

He said the international community recognizes China’s responsible approach. According to Li, China consistently supports the global ban on nuclear testing. Li urged the United States to take responsibility for nuclear disarmament. He noted that the US holds a large nuclear arsenal. Therefore, it should take the lead in reducing nuclear weapons.

He accused Washington of distorting China’s nuclear policy for political purposes. He said the US wants to maintain nuclear dominance. At the same time, it avoids its own disarmament duties. Li also said US actions harm global strategic stability. He warned that such accusations undermine the international nuclear order.

China, he stressed, remains committed to peaceful development. The country follows a nuclear strategy based on self-defense. Li said China maintains a stable and consistent nuclear policy. Finally, he called on the US to reaffirm the moratorium on nuclear testing. He urged Washington to take concrete steps to support nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
