China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, warned that Beijing will respond firmly. He said China will take countermeasures to safeguard its sovereignty. He was referring to any attempt by Japan to intervene in the Taiwan question under the pretext of “collective self-defense.”
Fu spoke at a meeting of the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization. He said such a move would amount to aggression against China. He stressed that any intervention would cross a red line. Therefore, China would take resolute action.
Fu stated that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. He said this position is based on historical and legal foundations. He stressed that the Taiwan question is entirely China’s internal affair. Therefore, no country has the right to interfere in any form.He added that using force under the guise of “self-defense” is unacceptable. He warned that such actions would seriously undermine regional stability and violate basic principles of international law.
Moreover, Fu warned that some Japanese leaders have linked Taiwan to what they call a “situation threatening Japan’s survival.” He said this claim creates scenarios under the Japan-US alliance framework. In turn, it attempts to justify the use of “collective self-defense” to intervene in Taiwan.
According to Fu, these arguments have no legal basis. He said they distort international law. Also, he added that they undermine the post-war international order.Fu also pointed to key historical documents. He said Japan must honor its obligations as a country defeated in World War II. Specifically, he referenced the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Proclamation, and the Japanese Instrument of Surrender.
He argued that intervention in Taiwan would contradict these documents. In addition, he said such actions would violate the UN Charter. He cited respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. additionally, he also stressed non-interference in internal affairs.Fu called on peace-loving countries to remain vigilant. He urged firm opposition to what he described as dangerous rhetoric.
In conclusion, he reiterated that any Japanese move under “collective self-defense” would constitute aggression and seriously harm regional peace and stability. China, he said, will respond resolutely to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
