South Korea Urges Korea Dialogue With North

Date:

South Korea’s unification minister urged Pyongyang to pursue renewed Korea dialogue following recent diplomatic signals from Washington. The appeal highlights growing efforts to restart negotiations between the United States and North Korea after several years of stalled diplomacy.

Unification Minister Chung Dong-young made the remarks while speaking to reporters in Seoul on Monday. He said recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump indicate that Washington remains open to direct talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Chung explained that South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok recently discussed the issue during meetings in Washington. The prime minister held talks with Trump at the White House during a diplomatic visit last week.

Kim Min-seok also met several senior officials from the U.S. administration during the visit. These meetings included discussions with Vice President JD Vance and technology policy director Michael Kratsios.

According to Kim, Trump expressed interest in meeting Kim Jong-un again under the right circumstances. However, the U.S. President indicated that the timing of such a meeting remains uncertain.

Trump suggested that a potential meeting could occur during his upcoming visit to China. The president plans to travel to China between late March and early April for a summit with President Xi Jinping.

Chung said that restarting the Korea dialogue would benefit stability across the entire Korean Peninsula. Therefore, he urged North Korea to respond constructively and seize the opportunity for renewed diplomatic engagement.

He emphasized that the region needs continued diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and maintain long-term peace. In addition, he noted that sustained Korea dialogue could create conditions for broader cooperation and security improvements.

Chung also referred to earlier expectations surrounding Trump’s previous visit to South Korea last October. Officials had speculated that the trip might include a meeting between Trump and Kim Jong-un.

However, that anticipated summit never occurred, leaving uncertainty surrounding future diplomatic engagement. Chung suggested that Trump may now seek clarity regarding Kim Jong-un’s willingness to meet again.

Meanwhile, North Korea continues to maintain several longstanding demands regarding negotiations with the United States. Chung explained that Pyongyang has consistently called for Washington to abandon what it describes as hostile policies.

North Korea has also requested recognition as a nuclear-weapon state within future diplomatic discussions. According to Chung, American policymakers must carefully consider those demands while shaping any negotiation strategy.

The minister also commented on North Korea’s recent test involving multiple rocket launchers. He said the action likely reflects Pyongyang’s response to ongoing military exercises between South Korea and the United States.

The annual Freedom Shield exercise began on March 9 and will continue for ten days. Military officials say the drills strengthen defense coordination between the two allies.

Chung also addressed speculation about possible secret communications between Washington and Pyongyang. He said he currently knows of no direct behind-the-scenes diplomatic exchanges.

Nevertheless, some observers believe renewed dialogue remains possible if both governments show flexibility. Earlier statements from Kim Jong-un suggested openness to improved relations under certain conditions.

During a recent ruling party congress, Kim said North Korea has no reason to avoid better relations with the United States. However, he added that future ties depend heavily on Washington’s policy approach.

Looking ahead, analysts say renewed diplomatic engagement could reshape regional security dynamics. Leaders in Seoul and Washington continue encouraging the Korea dialogue as a pathway toward stability on the Korean Peninsula.
