Kim Yo Jong Praises South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s Regret Over Drone Incident, Signals Rare Diplomatic Opening with Conditions

Date:

Kim Yo Jong delivered an unusual positive response to South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Monday. She called him honest and broad-minded for expressing regret over a drone infiltration incident. Kim serves as a department director in North Korea’s ruling party. She also holds the position of powerful sister to leader Kim Jong Un. She issued a statement through the Korean Central News Agency that evening.

Moreover, Kim stated that our government assesses the South Korean president’s personal expression of regret very positively. She described his mention of measures to prevent recurrence as a wise decision for himself. This unusual positive response from Pyongyang marks a rare moment in inter-Korean relations. North Korea rarely offers any praise to South Korean leaders. The statement therefore caught many observers by surprise.

Kim also issued a warning alongside her positive remarks. She demanded that Seoul halt all reckless provocative acts against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. She called on South Korea to abandon any attempts at contact as well. If provocative acts infringe upon our sacred and inviolable sovereignty again, Kim warned, they will pay a difficult price. This unusual positive response therefore came with clear conditions attached. However, the praise was not unconditional.

Earlier on Monday, President Lee addressed the drone incident during a Cabinet meeting. He spoke at the presidential office in Seoul. Although it was not our government’s intention, Lee stated, we express regret to the North over unnecessary military tensions. He blamed some irresponsible and reckless actions for provoking the situation. Monday marked the first time Lee has directly expressed regret to North Korea. His statement opened the door for this unusual positive response from Kim Yo Jong.

The joint military-police task force referred three individuals to prosecutors on March 31. A National Intelligence Service employee and two active-duty soldiers faced charges. They allegedly helped civilians manufacture drones and send them to North Korea. The task force referred these suspects without detention. The investigation continues into the drone infiltration incident.

Observers see Kim’s statement as a potential diplomatic opening. However, her warning about future provocations remains stern. The two Koreas have experienced heightened military tensions in recent months. Lee’s apology represents a departure from his previous harder stance. Kim’s unusual positive response suggests Pyongyang may welcome further diplomatic gestures. Any future drone incident could quickly reverse this progress. Both capitals now face the challenge of building on this moment.
