KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun Seeks Cross-Strait Tech Cooperation on Beijing AI Tour

Date:

Cross-strait tech cooperation took center stage as KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun began a Beijing tour on Friday afternoon. Cheng said she had specifically requested to observe AI education in schools and engage with technology companies. She described the trip as well worth it after her first day of visits. The delegation first stopped at Tsinghua University High School to learn about AI applications in teaching.

In school laboratories, the delegation watched student-developed projects including robot football matches. They also observed robotic dogs and robotic arms in action. Cheng engaged with students and teachers during the visit, praising their innovative work. On Saturday morning, the delegation visited the Zhongguancun Exhibition Center. There they gained firsthand experience of Beijing’s strong momentum as an AI innovation hub. Cheng showed strong interest in a bionic intelligent hand on display. She examined its movements closely and encouraged other delegation members to try it.

The delegation later held discussions with representatives from technology companies. These included AI model developer Zhipu AI and robotics firm Galbot. The two sides explored new opportunities for cross-strait sci-tech cooperation. Cheng expressed enthusiasm about what she had seen during the visits. She noted that integrating AI into basic education could provide useful guidance for Taiwan. Using technological innovation to drive industrial growth also offered valuable lessons.

Cheng called for greater support for young people in Taiwan to help unlock their potential. She said that without political obstacles, cross-strait cooperation could make significant contributions to humanity. The delegation also visited cultural landmarks during their stay. These included the National Centre for the Performing Arts and the Palace Museum in Beijing. The group is scheduled to visit a Xiaomi auto factory on Sunday morning. They will return to Taiwan at noon on the same day.

Cheng’s delegation included KMT members from various sectors. The visit reflects the KMT’s continued interest in engaging with mainland China on practical cooperation. Future exchanges may focus on AI, robotics, and other emerging technologies. Both sides see potential benefits in sharing knowledge and resources. Taiwan’s technology sector may gain new insights from Beijing’s AI ecosystem. Meanwhile, mainland companies could benefit from Taiwan’s manufacturing expertise. The coming months will show whether concrete agreements follow this exploratory visit.
