Energy partnership talks took place between Prime Minister Uchral Nyam-Osor and Russian Ambassador Evsikov Alexey Nikolaevich. The Prime Minister expressed appreciation for congratulatory messages from Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and United Russia party chairman Dmitry Medvedev. He reaffirmed Mongolia’s commitment to further expanding the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations.
The sides discussed cooperation in the fuel and energy sector during the meeting. The supplementary protocol to the intergovernmental agreement on aviation fuel supply to Mongolia has received support from key parliamentary committees. The Standing Committees on Security and Foreign Policy, Budget, and Economy of the State Great Khural have all reviewed and backed the protocol. Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Damdinnyam Gongor will sign the protocol in Moscow in the near future.
Prime Minister Uchral noted that the current situation in the Middle East is causing instability in global energy markets. The crisis is driving a sharp increase in petroleum product prices worldwide. This price surge is beginning to pose challenges to Mongolia’s transport, mining and agriculture sectors. Mining activity is picking up across the country. Spring planting has also begun for the agricultural season. Mongolia expressed interest in purchasing petroleum products, including diesel fuel, under preferential terms for a period of no less than six months.
The Prime Minister also noted that the government has begun budget-funded preparatory work. This work will build infrastructure for state petroleum reserves. He further requested support to ensure stable and uninterrupted supplies of ammonia in aqueous solution. This chemical is a key input for Mongolia’s agriculture and mining sectors. He highlighted the possibility of concluding a dedicated agreement on ammonia supplies.
Ambassador Evsikov thanked Prime Minister Uchral for his attention to Mongolia-Russia relations. He noted the significance of Uchral’s previous official visit to Russia as speaker of parliament. The ambassador said he would convey the issues raised to relevant Russian authorities. The two sides also exchanged views on cooperation in food and agriculture, tourism, education, culture, sports, and humanitarian fields. These discussions took place within the framework of the 105th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Russian authorities will now review Mongolia’s requests for preferential fuel pricing. The coming months will determine whether Moscow agrees to the six-month discounted supply terms. Both sides expressed commitment to deepening their comprehensive strategic partnership.
