President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa of Mongolia has arrived in Kazakhstan for a state visit from April 20 to 23. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev extended the invitation for this official trip. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu welcomed the Mongolian leader at Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport. Mongolia’s Ambassador Batjargal Gunaajav and other officials also attended the arrival ceremony.
The two heads of state will hold a private meeting during this visit. Official talks will follow, and then both leaders will brief media representatives. President Khurelsukh will also meet the Chairperson of Kazakhstan’s Parliament. He will additionally hold discussions with the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan. These meetings will focus on exchanging views about bilateral relations and cooperation.
Both sides expect to sign several intergovernmental documents. Interagency agreements will also receive signatures during the visit. These documents will strengthen the legal foundation of Mongolia Kazakhstan ties significantly. President Khurelsukh will attend the Regional Ecological Summit in Astana as well. His participation highlights the growing importance of environmental cooperation between both nations.
Bilateral trade turnover exceeded 58 million US dollars last year. This represents a 7.2 percent increase compared with 2024 figures. Mongolia exports food products, horse meat, wool and cashmere items to Kazakhstan. It also sends carpets, rugs and transit vehicles across the border. Kazakhstan exports flour products, confectionery, fruit, rice and tobacco to Mongolia. Cognac represents another significant export category from Kazakhstan.
A total of 74 companies operate with Kazakh or joint investment in Mongolia. More than 24,000 Kazakh citizens traveled to Mongolia in 2025. Approximately the same number of Mongolian citizens visited Kazakhstan during that year. Some 575 Kazakh citizens currently hold residence permits in Mongolia. More than 4,000 Mongolian citizens hold residence permits in Kazakhstan. These figures demonstrate the deepening people to people connections within Mongolia Kazakhstan ties.
Since 2019, twenty five Mongolian students have studied in Kazakhstan annually. The Kazakh government provides scholarships for these students each year. Eleven students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs for the 2024 to 2025 academic year. Twenty two students enrolled for the 2025 to 2026 academic year. This educational exchange will likely expand further in coming years. The state visit concludes on April 23 with both sides expressing optimism. Future cooperation in trade, ecology and education will likely intensify. Mongolia Kazakhstan ties have entered a new phase of strategic partnership.
