Yoon, a late 20s Kia employee, recently spent evenings browsing SK hynix’s recruitment page. He wrestled with whether to hide his bachelor’s degree. Specifically, SK hynix’s latest production line openings restrict applicants to high school graduates. Yoon admitted he considered not listing his four year degree at all.
Samsung Electronics posted 57.2 trillion won in first quarter operating profit on April 7. That figure nearly triples the company’s previous quarterly record. SK hynix will report on Thursday with projected earnings of roughly 38 trillion won. Consequently, that represents a year on year increase of over 400 percent.
Samsung semiconductor employees received bonuses approaching 50 percent of their 2025 salary. SK hynix removed its bonus cap entirely last year. The company paid an average of roughly 140 million won per employee. Moreover, if SK hynix hits analyst forecasts for this year, per capita bonuses in early 2027 could approach 700 million won. Therefore, the chip hiring surge has made manufacturing roles extraordinarily attractive.
Both companies launched major spring recruitment drives this year. For instance, sales of prep books for Samsung’s hiring exam rose 40 percent year on year. A guide for SK Group’s test topped the Yes24 e book bestseller list. Additionally, private fabrication training programs now have waitlists extending 12,000 deep. Students pay up to 1 million won for courses as short as one week.
Samsung and SK hynix affiliated semiconductor departments guarantee employment for graduates. These programs recorded a competition ratio of 7.16 to 1 this year. That figure outpaces the national medical school average of roughly 6 to 1. As a result, cram schools in Seoul’s Daechi dong district launched dedicated semiconductor prep courses. Top scoring students now apply to chip programs alongside medical schools. Thus, the chip hiring surge has even shifted university enrollment patterns.
Jung, a mid 20s master’s candidate, is weighing whether to finish his degree. He believes the opportunity cost of another year in academia keeps climbing. Similarly, Im, a 28 year old Samsung production worker with four years experience, is exploring a move to SK hynix. He said the perception among industry workers is clear. SK hynix is irresistibly stronger in incentives right now.
Park, a late 30s SK hynix production worker, described the mood shift. Two years ago, leaving SK hynix for Kia’s production line was enviable. Now the mood has completely reversed in favor of chip jobs. Consequently, Shin Chang hwan, a semiconductor engineering professor at Korea University, said the supercycle could turn a country obsessed with medical school into one obsessed with engineering.
However, Yoo Hoi jun, dean of KAIST’s Graduate School of AI Semiconductor, offered a caution. Those who work in fabs before returning to academia often become stronger researchers. A Bank of Korea survey found 44.9 percent of STEM postgraduates are considering overseas moves. Pay gaps remain the primary reason for considering emigration. Therefore, the chip hiring surge may need even higher compensation to retain domestic talent.
