Magnitude 6.2 Earthquake Strikes Southern Hokkaido Injuring One

Date:

A Hokkaido earthquake struck the southern Tokachi district at about 5:23 a.m. on Monday. The tremor reached upper 5 on Japan’s 7 point seismic scale in Urahoro town. The seismic focus lay 83 kilometers deep below the surface. The Japan Meteorological Agency estimated the magnitude at 6.2 for this event. Consequently, the Hokkaido earthquake struck outside areas covered by an existing advisory.

The agency confirmed that this quake does not fall under its advisory framework. The advisory had called for vigilance against a major earthquake in specific zones. An agency official explained that the magnitude was relatively moderate at 6.2. Furthermore, the earthquake occurred inside the Pacific plate rather than at a boundary. Therefore, it was not a plate boundary earthquake as referenced in the advisory. The Hokkaido earthquake struck in a location that does not trigger new warnings.

According to Hokkaido prefectural government data compiled by 8 a.m., one person sustained an injury. A 91 year old woman living in a nursing home in Hakodate fell during the shaking. She suffered a minor injury from the fall rather than from structural damage. The earthquake triggered no tsunami anywhere along the coast. This absence of tsunami allowed residents to avoid evacuation procedures.

The Hokkaido earthquake struck with enough force to increase geological risks in the region. The agency called for residents to stay alert against aftershocks for about one week. Strong shocks could continue with intensities up to upper 5 on the scale. Rockfalls and landslides pose increased dangers in areas with steep terrain. Consequently, those in affected zones should avoid dangerous slopes and cliffs.

Unless another major earthquake occurs in the advisory covered area, the government will lift its special preparations call. The current advisory for public vigilance is expected to end at 5 p.m. on Monday. This timeline assumes no additional significant seismic activity in the meantime. The Hokkaido earthquake struck as a reminder of Japan’s constant seismic vulnerability. Residents in the Tokachi region should remain cautious for the coming days. Emergency services remain on standby for any further developments. The meteorological agency continues monitoring seismic activity around the clock.
