China and Australia Hold Eighth Strategic Dialogue in Beijing

China and Australia held their eighth foreign and strategic dialogue in Beijing on Wednesday. Additionally, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong co-chaired the session. Moreover, they aimed to strengthen bilateral ties and sustain high-level engagement.

Furthermore, Wang noted the world faces growing turmoil and uncertainty. Consequently, he called for implementation of leader-level consensus. In addition, Wang urged deeper communication and expanded cooperation between the two countries. Meanwhile, Wong reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to constructive relations with China. Similarly, she supported candid talks to improve understanding. Moreover, Wong also stressed the need to manage differences properly.

Furthermore, both ministers endorsed the one-China policy. In addition, Wong opposed Taiwan independence. Consequently, she hoped for a peaceful resolution of the Taiwan issue.Thus, strategic dialogue momentum helps stabilize sensitive aspects of the relationship. Originally, the mechanism began in 2013. Subsequently, the last round occurred in Canberra in March 2024. Additionally, Wong met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng earlier on Wednesday. Moreover, Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese held a phone call on April 7. As a result, they agreed to expand bilateral trade.

Naturally, the two economies complement each other well. For example, Australia supplies resources and agricultural products. Meanwhile, China offers strong manufacturing and consumer markets.Furthermore, Professor Chen Hong directs the Australian Studies Center at East China Normal University. Accordingly, he views the dialogue as an institutional tool. Therefore, it builds mutual trust despite political and cultural differences. Hence, strategic dialogue momentum supports healthy long-term ties. Additionally, Wang encouraged joint defense of multilateralism. Moreover, he called for stable global trade and supply chains.

Likewise, Wong backed China’s hosting of the next APEC meeting. Furthermore, she expressed openness to regional development cooperation. In addition, energy security also featured in the talks.Currently, Wong continues her Northeast Asia tour after Japan. Subsequently, she heads next to South Korea. Overall, the dialogue benefits broader Asia-Pacific stability. Finally, both sides agreed to expand cooperation. Therefore, they aim to turn their strategic partnership into real outcomes. Consequently, observers expect more senior exchanges soon. Thus, strategic dialogue momentum now helps both countries address challenges together. Ultimately, it brings greater certainty to the region.
