This charming public spot includes bricks, two green plants, and a couple of decorative stone monuments. One monument features the town’s symbolic flower, engraved as a local tribute. Residents have proudly called it the world’s smallest park for over 30 years. However, only recently did the town gain global recognition for this hidden gem. Back in 1988, Nagaizumi built the park using leftover land from a nearby road project. The idea came after a town official heard of Mill Ends Park in Oregon. That American park had long held the record with 0.29 square meter of space. Inspired to break the record, town leaders started their official challenge in 2023. Since then, the world’s smallest park has transformed from a local oddity into a historic landmark.
To win the title, the town raised about 2.5 million yen from donations and its budget. Officials then hired professionals to measure the park with precision and gather documentation. They also reclassified the land from a road margin into a proper park. All of this ensured they met Guinness World Records’ strict requirements. Because of these efforts, the world’s smallest park now welcomes visitors from across Japan.
Shuji Koyama, from the construction division, shared his pride in the recognition. He hopes the world’s smallest park becomes a symbol of the town’s creativity and warmth. Visitors now stop by, take photos, and enjoy the tiny space with big character. Even a place smaller than a single step can bring smiles to many.
