Statistical Cooperation Strengthens in Mongolia Japan Talks

Date:

Mongolia and Japan have deepened their statistical cooperation during a parliamentary meeting. Seddorj Renchinbyamba, chair of the State Great Khural’s economics committee, received Japanese Vice-Minister Hideyuki Nakano. The two nations established diplomatic relations 54 years ago. Consequently, this statistical cooperation builds on their Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership. The National Statistics Office of Mongolia and Japan’s Statistics Bureau signed a memorandum in 2017. Their collaboration continued without interruption even during the pandemic.

Japan expressed strong interest in Mongolia’s innovative data collection methods. Mongolia’s statistics office uses mobile phone and satellite data effectively. Therefore, this statistical cooperation allows Japan to learn from Mongolian practices. The Japanese side also raised issues about trainers arriving in June. Chairman Seddorj thanked Japan for dispatching experts to Mongolia’s statistical sector. He emphasized regular bilateral meetings as highly effective. The committee focuses on enhancing the Mongolia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement benefits. It also supports localizing Japanese investment companies in Mongolia.

Batdavaa B., chair of Mongolia’s statistics office, attended the meeting. Japanese Ambassador Masaru Igawahara also participated in the talks. Both sides reviewed implementation of previous agreements. This statistical cooperation represents a two-way learning process. Japan hopes to adopt some of Mongolia’s techniques for its own systems. Looking ahead, the two countries plan to expand data-sharing protocols. The pandemic proved that cross-border statistical cooperation remains essential for crisis response. Chairman Seddorj reaffirmed Mongolia’s commitment to the partnership. Ambassador Igawahara pledged continued Japanese support for Mongolia’s development goals.
