Beijing Tourism Surge Drives Record Holiday Revenue

Beijing experienced a strong Beijing tourism surge during the five-day May Day holiday. The city received 18.83 million tourist visits, up 5.1 percent year on year. The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism released these figures on Tuesday. Consequently, this Beijing tourism surge generated total revenue of 22.36 billion yuan. That amount represents a 6.6 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Inbound tourism also contributed significantly to this Beijing tourism surge. The city recorded 128,000 inbound tourist visits during the holiday. This figure marks a 22.3 percent rise from the previous year. Moreover, inbound tourism spending reached 1.38 billion yuan, up 22.6 percent. Therefore, international travelers are returning to Beijing in stronger numbers. The city rolled out more than 2,000 cultural and tourism activities. These included artistic performances, scenic spot tours, and popular science research trips. Trendy fairs also attracted many younger visitors during the break.

The city held 1,684 sessions of 332 offline commercial performances. Total box office revenue from these shows reached about 260 million yuan. Consequently, cultural consumption played a major role in the Beijing tourism surge. Officials attribute the growth to improved travel infrastructure and marketing campaigns. The May Day holiday traditionally sees heavy domestic travel across China. This year, Beijing outperformed many other major cities. Tourism analysts point to the city’s rich historical and modern attractions. The Forbidden City and Great Wall remained top destinations for families.

Looking ahead, Beijing expects continued growth through the summer season. The city plans additional promotional events targeting international travelers. Direct flight routes have expanded to several new overseas cities. Furthermore, visa policies have become more flexible for group tours. The Beijing tourism surge reflects broader national recovery trends. China’s domestic tourism sector has rebounded strongly post-pandemic. However, Beijing’s focus on high-quality experiences sets it apart. Cultural performances and trendy fairs appeal to younger demographics. The city also invested heavily in digital booking systems. These systems reduced wait times and improved visitor satisfaction.

The Beijing tourism surge also benefits local businesses and service providers. Hotels reported occupancy rates above 85 percent during the holiday. Restaurants near popular attractions saw long queues daily. Retail sales of souvenirs and local products jumped significantly. The municipal government used real-time data to manage crowd flows effectively. This prevented overcrowding at major sites like the Summer Palace.

For inbound tourists, multilingual guides and signs improved accessibility. The city’s tourism bureau plans to release a summer activity calendar soon. Experts predict another Beijing tourism surge during the National Day holiday in October. Sustaining this momentum will require ongoing investment in infrastructure. Nevertheless, the May Day results provide a solid foundation for 2026. The Beijing tourism surge clearly demonstrates the city’s enduring appeal.
