A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Liuzhou in South China’s Guangxi region early Monday. The quake hit Liunan district at 12:21 a.m. at a depth of eight kilometers. Consequently local authorities launched a Level-III emergency response immediately. Rescue operations by fire, police and emergency crews began within hours. The earthquake killed a 63-year-old man and his 53-year-old wife. A 91-year-old resident also got trapped but rescue teams saved him later that morning.
The earthquake caused 13 buildings to collapse completely. Four people went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. More than 7,000 residents relocated to safer areas. The emergency response included 51 fire and rescue vehicles. Officials deployed 315 personnel to the quake-hit zone. Rescuers used life detectors, search dogs, drones and heavy machinery. Communications, power, water, gas and traffic roads remained operational normally.
The State Council earthquake relief headquarters activated a Level-IV emergency response on Monday. It sent a work team to support local efforts. The China Earthquake Administration also activated its own Level-III emergency response. Officials held video conferences with the Guangxi earthquake administration. Many local residents took shelter on streets after the tremor. A resident surnamed Liu said she felt the jolt while asleep. She saw her fan still shaking and rushed outside immediately. Medical staff confirmed the rescued 91-year-old is in stable condition. The hospital admitted the senior for further treatment. Authorities continue monitoring aftershocks closely. They also work to verify all casualties and property damage. Search operations ended by Monday afternoon. The emergency response will now shift to recovery and rebuilding.
