A farewell ceremony for South Korea’s Consul General in Erbil took place on Monday. Seungcheol Lim completed his diplomatic mission to the Kurdistan Region during this farewell ceremony. Distinguished guests, ministers, and business leaders attended the event. The ceremony also launched two new initiatives inspired by Lim’s vision.
The event recalled Korea’s first arrival in the Kurdistan Region twenty-two years ago. Korean soldiers came not only with weapons but also with hand shovels, medical supplies and toys. They brought reconstruction, humanitarian support and the spirit of “We Are Your friends”. Consequently that historic chapter laid the foundation for today’s strong partnership.
This ceremony highlighted Lim’s success in reaching the hearts of local people. He built trust not only through diplomacy but through genuine human connection. Therefore the Consulate together with partners launched the K-Study Research Network. This platform brings together researchers dedicated to knowledge exchange and cooperation. The network continues to grow with support from talented professionals.
Organizers also announced the AI Olympiad website during the farewell ceremony. This competition encourages young talents to explore artificial intelligence and innovation. The initiative aims to shape the future of society through technology. Furthermore the ceremony featured remarks on Research and Development from Dr. Nabaz Khayyat. He spoke about how R&D transforms government institutions and policymaking. Korea’s own development journey serves as a strong example of such transformation.
Honored guests included prominent political figures like Mustafa Barzani, Safeen Dizayee, Head of the Department of Foreign Relations. Yehya Chali, CEO of Ovanya Company, introduced the AI Olympiad. Rebeen Al Silefanee, Chairman of the K-Study Research Network, also attended. The farewell ceremony thus celebrated friendship, cooperation, research and innovation together.
These initiatives will continue building bridges between Korea and the Kurdistan Region for years. Lim leaves behind not just a diplomatic legacy but ongoing projects and ideas. The momentum of cooperation will continue long after his departure. This farewell ceremony marked an end of one chapter and a beginning of many more. The Consulate expressed deep gratitude to all partners who made this special occasion possible. South Korea and the Kurdistan Region share a relationship built on trust and genuine friendship.
