GM Korea Sales Decline 5.9 Percent in May on Weak Demand

Date:

GM Korea reported a sales decline in May as demand weakened both at home and abroad. The company sold 47,081 vehicles last month, which marked a 5.9 percent drop from a year earlier. Officials released the figures in a press statement on Monday. The sales decline stemmed from sharp contractions in both export and domestic markets. Consequently, the automaker faced a challenging month across all channels.

Export shipments fell 4.8 percent on-year to 46,273 units in May. Meanwhile, domestic sales plunged 42.6 percent to just 808 units. Therefore, the domestic market accounted for a tiny fraction of total volume. The Chevrolet Trax Crossover SUV led the overseas sales with 28,988 units sold. Following closely, the Trailblazer compact SUV recorded 16,275 units in export sales. These two models continue to anchor the company’s outbound shipments. However, even strong export performers could not offset the overall sales decline.

The domestic performance raises concerns about GM Korea’s position in the home market. Selling only 808 vehicles in a single month points to intense competitive pressure. Rival brands have captured larger domestic market share with newer models. Additionally, overall consumer sentiment may have softened during the period. Industry analysts will closely monitor whether this sales decline persists into the summer months. The company has not yet announced specific measures to reverse the trend.

General Motors has maintained its South Korean unit as a key export hub for compact SUVs. The Trax and Trailblazer models enjoy steady demand in North American and other global markets. Yet the May figures show that even reliable export volumes can fluctuate. GM Korea’s management will likely review its domestic strategy in the coming weeks. The automaker continues to face headwinds from global supply chain uncertainty and regional competition. For now, the sales decline serves as a reminder of the volatility in the automotive sector. Future performance will depend on new product launches and shifts in consumer buying patterns.
