Prosecutors Seek Maximum Punishment After Taipei Main Station Attacks

Date:

Taipei prosecutors today indicted a 41-year-old man for two violent attacks at Taipei Main Station. They announced they will seek maximum punishment. The suspect, Lee Kun-jui, first assaulted a Taiwanese man surnamed Chen on April 25 at about 2:07 p.m. He kicked Chen in the abdomen inside the station lobby. Shortly afterward, at 2:24 p.m., Lee targeted a three-year-old Filipino girl at the same location. He struck the child with his hands and knocked her to the ground.

Then he kicked her twice while she lay on the floor. The attack left bruises on her back and face. The child’s mother immediately picked her up. However, Lee attempted to strike the girl again. Bystanders intervened and stopped him before further harm occurred. Police arrested Lee at the scene, and a court held him without bail.

Prosecutors determined that Lee violated the Child and Juvenile Welfare and Rights Protection Act and the Criminal Code. They charged him with assault but did not pursue attempted murder. The evidence showed no use of weapons and no intent to kill. Nevertheless, prosecutors emphasized that they would seek maximum punishment. They cited the violence against a young child visiting Taiwan and the damage to the nation’s tourism image. Therefore, the decision reflects the seriousness of the crime. The indictment describes how Lee first attacked the adult man without provocation. Then he turned his aggression toward the foreign child.

Consequently, the case has drawn attention to public safety at transportation hubs. Prosecutors argued that Lee’s actions harmed Taiwan’s reputation abroad. As a result, they pushed for the harshest possible sentence. The court will now consider the evidence and the request for maximum punishment. The trial date has not yet been set. This case underscores the legal system’s strict response to violent crimes against minors and tourists.
