Adora Magic City Launches China’s First Cruise-to-Nowhere Voyage

Date:

China’s first homegrown large cruise ship departed from Shanghai on Saturday, launching the country’s inaugural cruise-to-nowhere voyage. The Adora Magic City sailed from the Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal without any port calls. This three-day, two-night itinerary runs through early Monday. Consequently, passengers enjoy a relaxed, immersive experience without rushing between destinations.

A tourist surnamed Hu, a white-collar worker from Shanghai, spoke as she boarded. “It feels very relaxing, and I don’t have to take extra days off work,” she said. “I am really looking forward to experiencing the homegrown large cruise ship.” Meanwhile, the operator enhanced onboard entertainment options significantly. The lineup now includes stand-up comedy, magic performances, theme parties, and late-night dining. Furthermore, the passenger load was capped at 80 percent capacity for comfort. The average age of passengers dropped to 47, down from the usual 55 on regular routes.

Shanghai issued China’s first entry-exit permit for such cruises on Friday. The following day, authorities provided streamlined customs and border inspection services for travelers. Tong Danying, an official with the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission, highlighted the product’s novelty. She said cruises to nowhere are not a simplified version of traditional sailings. Instead, they turn the ship itself into the destination, creating a new consumption scenario.

China’s cruise tourism has boomed over the past year. Total cruise passenger throughput in 2025 surged 25.3 percent compared to the previous year. Therefore, the cruise-to-nowhere model enters a rapidly expanding market. It offers a convenient option for short-stay travelers seeking leisure without port-hopping. The voyage marks a milestone for China’s domestic shipbuilding and tourism industries. Moving forward, operators expect more such sailings to attract busy professionals and families. The cruise-to-nowhere concept could become a staple in China’s maritime leisure portfolio.
