Subaru to Launch U.S.-Built Ascent SUV in Japan This Year

Date:

Subaru Corp. plans to introduce its U.S.-built Ascent sport utility vehicle to Japan later this year. The company will use simplified safety rules from the Japan-U.S. tariff deal. The three-row Ascent SUV would become Subaru’s largest domestic model. It fills a gap the automaker has not addressed with a local vehicle. Consequently, the move marks a rare instance of a Japanese carmaker importing a U.S.-made vehicle back to its home market.

The Ascent SUV measures 4.99 meters long and 1.93 meters wide. It is Subaru’s biggest vehicle globally. Moreover, it has been available mainly in the U.S. since 2018. There it starts at about $40,700, or roughly 6.5 million yen. In Japan, the company has yet to announce local pricing. Furthermore, the vehicle will keep its left-hand-drive layout. It will match overseas specifications rather than adapt to Japan’s right-hand-drive norm.

Subaru’s decision relies on streamlined import procedures. Japan introduced these under its tariff agreement with the U.S. Previously, strict safety inspections created hurdles for U.S.-built vehicles entering Japan. Now, the eased rules allow Subaru to bring the Ascent SUV without extensive modifications. In addition, the policy shift has already prompted Toyota to act. The company launched its own U.S.-built models in Japan, signaling a broader trend.

The automaker hopes the Ascent SUV will attract families seeking a spacious three-row vehicle. Subaru currently does not serve this segment with Japan-produced cars. Additionally, the model’s larger dimensions appeal to consumers who prioritize passenger and cargo space. However, the left-hand-drive setup may limit its appeal to a niche audience comfortable with that configuration. Analysts view the launch as a strategic test. They ask whether eased trade rules can reshape Japan’s vehicle market.

Looking ahead, Subaru will announce final pricing and a sales timeline in the coming months. The launch may encourage other Japanese automakers to import similar models. This would deepen economic ties between the two countries. For now, the arrival of the Ascent SUV underscores a key point. Trade policy can directly influence product offerings and consumer choice in Japan’s protected auto market.
