Xi’s Visit Strengthens China-North Korea Relations in Pyongyang

Date:

Xi’s visit marks a significant moment as Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Pyongyang on Monday. He met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un for the first time in nearly seven years. Xi traveled with first lady Peng Liyuan along with senior officials Cai Qi and Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The two leaders celebrate the 65th anniversary of their Treaty of Friendship. Moreover, they discuss expanded economic cooperation and important regional security issues. Xi’s visit comes as North Korea builds stronger military links with Russia.

Xi outlined his vision in an article published in the Workers Party newspaper. He urged deeper strategic communication and frequent high-level exchanges between both sides. However, the statement leaves out earlier references to denuclearization and peninsula dialogue. North Korea has expanded its cooperation with Moscow in recent months. Pyongyang sent troops to Russia’s Victory Day parade last month for example. In addition, the countries signed a mutual defense treaty in 2024. Consequently, Xi’s visit allows China to reassert its influence over its neighbor.

Pyongyang prepared warmly with Chinese and North Korean flags plus friendship banners along major streets. Chinese media highlighted the resumed cross-border train service this year. Meanwhile, South Korean officials monitor the summit closely without early judgments. Analysts note a clear evolution in China’s policy toward North Korea over seven years. Beijing now focuses on long-term strategic alignment instead of mediation efforts. Furthermore, both nations pledge support for a multipolar world order and international institutions.

This summit carries broad implications for stability in Northeast Asia. Observers expect talks on trade growth and coordinated positions toward the United States. Therefore, the meeting highlights enduring close contacts between the two countries. Xi’s visit shapes future regional dynamics in important ways. Leaders plan sustained engagement to advance their shared objectives.
